Tour - Part 2

Step 2:
The milled malt is mixed with hot water in the mash tun. It is stirred to release the sugars, resulting in a porridge-like mixture.

We use B2O (a mixture of 20% biodiesel and 80% diesel) in our boiler for all of our hot water and heating. This reduces our carbon emissions and use of petroleum.

Step 3:
This mixture is transferred to the lauter tun. This kettle has a strainer in the bottom and the liquid, nowcalled "wort," is allowed to drain, leaving the spent grains in the tank. A process called sparging sprays hot water on the leftover grains gleaning any sugars that might remain.

Even though all we use for brewing is the sugars, the spent grains aren't wasted.
After we're through with them, a farmer takes them and they are fed to cattle.
